A lot of smokers enjoy smoking. A smoker can think cigarettes reduce stress, or allow them to relax and never think seriously about stopping smoking cigarettes. And that is fine. While we know smoking is not good for our health, it is not the only thing that ‘we humans’ do that is risky and not supportive of a long and healthy life, BUT we still do them.
Think about the things you enjoy doing. Perhaps surfing. You could get: eaten by a shark; hit in the head by another surfer; drown; get bashed up on the rocks! What about motorbike riding? Now there is a risky pastime. If you don’t get run over on the way to a bike race, then you have a high probability of having an accident if you compete. Statistically, it is not a safe activity. What about snow-skiing / sled riding/ football / rugby / basketball / diving / swimming? All of these activities have risks involved, but if we enjoy them, we do them and take our chances.
The Australian Health Department decided to change the branding on packets of cigarettes several years ago. The idea was if the packets had gross, ugly and vivid photos of the results of smoking more smokers would give up. It was a dramatic failure. Smokers just began asking for their brand of the diseases. “Could I have a packet of lung cancer please!” or “A pack of emphysema” Smokers know the risks of smokers. But, they also know the perceived benefits that smoking cigarettes give them. Until they are ready, they won’t give up.
Over the years we have had many people – partners, parents, friends, siblings – all well-intentioned asking how to convince a smoker to stop smoking. The simple answer is you can’t! When a smoker is ready, they will stop smoking. Sometimes it is just seeing a pamphlet at the right time. It might be an advert on TV. More often though, it is a life-change event. This may be a health scare, or for women especially, pregnancy. Very often, it is when children get older and parents worry the kids will smoke. For every person there is a trigger, a time when they know – I have had enough! That is the best time for anyone to stop smoking cigarettes. That is the time to book an appointment and come and see us.
When the time is right, hypnosis is quick and easy. Just 60 minutes is all it takes to stop smoking. Go online, Book your appointment, Turn up.
That’s all it takes when you are ready.
